The Squished Cricket Incident

Poor Mr. Smiles (7 yr old) was not smiling the other day.
He wanted to wear a certain pair of shoes but had left them out side. He ran out to get them, came back, put a foot inside one and exclaimed: "Mom! I put my shoe on and there was a cricket inside. I think I squished it!" He placed one leg over the other knee and tipped his foot up for me to see.
Sure 'nuff.
There was something black on his foot.
"I think the other half is still inside my shoe."
I grabbed a napkin and peered inside the ill-fated shoe. I took the other half out with the napkin.
"There's a leg." He pointed to the floor. I picked it up too.
Tears welled in his eyes. "What should I do?"
"Wash it off in the tub."
So Mr. Smiles hopped down the hall, showing sister the bottom of his foot along the way. "Eww," she said.
I checked on him. He was watching something black go down the drain.
A few minutes later he came in the kitchen with tears in his eyes again. "That was really gross Mom."
I pulled his head into my side and said, "I'm sorry that happened to you."
