Utah's got the strangest weather. We are considered a desert. Many summers are hot, dry and brown. Every few years our springs are wet, wet, wet. And green! Like this year. our total snowfall is over 300% what we normally receive here. It's June and I have beautiful tulips! Usually, spring flowers are around for a week.
Every year when I was younger I watched the mountaintops. I told myself a "true summer" happened when all the snow melted off the tops. I remember ONE true summer. Maybe this year will be a untrue summer :) I also recall the year we had tons of snow then tons of rain=tons of flooding. We couldn't get through our canyon because of the deep water standing on the road.
Even though we complain of the coldness of this spring thus far, the truth is, it's keeping the snow from melting too quickly and flooding. Many places already are experiencing water overflowing canals and levies. Cities all over Utah are preparing by providing sandbags and advice.
I didn't realize Mr. Smiles worried about the floods until he asked when we were getting our sandbags. I explained we didn't need them. He persisted. We talked about the flooding and I suddenly realized he imagined a tidal wave.
We showed him where the water might come from and most likely flow. Our city has a big ol' pipe down one of our streets, ready to head off extra water and we showed him that.
I think he wants a few sandbags now because they're cool.
